Dispatches From The Field - 12/29/11 - Lava Butte Trail

I'm back.

After some gentle prodding from friends, I am trying to get some posts up. I will have mileage, the long awaited Ironman Race Report and 2012 goals posted soon.

Currently training for the first "A" race of 2012. Did a run out past the Las Vegas Wash on the Lava Butte Trail. Here's a couple pics as I get myself organized.

Ironman Update - 11/19/11

Lucia did the Kids 1 mile race this morning and I tagged along. Took us about 15 minutes. She finished like a champ.

Practice swim went well today. About 1400 yards at a nice easy pace. Everything traveled well and all systems are go for tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Ironman Arizona Information

Faithful Readers,

I apologize for my recent flakiness regarding posting. It has been very busy in my life as of late and I have been full force on training and trying to keep my life right side up. I will try to catch up a few posts over the next couple days. For now, some housekeeping:

The Ironman Races have live tracking for athletes at http://www.ironmanlive.com/. You can track me by my last name (Eichelberger, Jeff) or by Bib #. I will try to get my number on the blog when I check-in Friday (begging an Internet connection).

I have created a checklist for myself and a timeline for events. I will try to post those shortly.

A journey like this has a lot of moving parts and involves a huge amount of support beyond the athlete. There are too many to thank here, but I have a couple of people I would like to mention:

My wife Melissa and my daughter Lucia - If you have ever done the training for an Ironman, you will know what I am talking about immediately. There is a tremendous amount of time required to train for something like this. I have tried to be mindful of my family and have tried to make sure that we have had quality time each week. Having said that, Melissa has picked up my slack more than once along the way and covered my responsibilities. She has given much this last year to give me this chance. Thank you for your love, support and understanding.

Coach Cyndee - Her careful planning of my training program each week has been the cornerstone of my being able to get ready physically and mentally. She has been patient with me when I have shown weakness or doubt and has gotten on my case (gently) when I have deviated from the program. She has also gone above and beyond in allowing me to train with her and some of her other clients and has given me free training time that I simply could not have afforded along the way. I have never asked and she has always simply offered. An utterly amazing woman with tons of personal experience, you could do much worse if you are looking for a Coach. Christine Lynch - Helping me in the later stages with my nutrition, our talks have been a huge wealth of knowledge and have allowed me to bounce ideas off someone who knows and to get reassurance in times of frustration. My performance has definitely improved with her helping me define a specific race nutrition program that is working for me. Race Report - 8/21/11 -Tour of Napa Valley

I'm late.

It seems to be the story of my life lately. I got up on time, but I let Melissa and Lucia sleep a little longer then I should. I also didn't do enough prep the night before and left things for the morning that I should have had ready. Result: I going as fast as I dare down Highway 29 to the Veterans Home in Yountville where the ride starts. I shake my head as I drive and chide myself: I have no one to blame.

On the plus side, it is an open start and I checked in yesterday, so there is no worry about not being able to ride. Still, I'm a little nervous because I have never done this ride and I don't want to get stuck in a no-man's land where there is no other cyclists to follow. Have you ever tried to follow a ride sheet? The last time I did that was at the Palm Springs Century, and that was with a group of fellow riders. We got lost twice.

Apparently Napa Valley likes to sleep in a little, because when we arrive 10 minutes after the start time, we are able to park all the way up front. I hop out, pump up the tires, get everything organized and get a good luck kiss from the wife (always a positive way to start the day).

I see a cluster of guys chewing the fat two cars over all wearing the same jerseys from one of the local cycling clubs. I don't see a start line anywhere, no announcer on a PA, no hoopla.

"Excuse me, but where is the start line?", I ask.
One of the cyclists grins at me, "right where you are."
"Do I have to check in anywhere before I go?"
"No, you've got your wristband. Take off when you want."
I say "thank you" and we wish each other a safe ride and then I am off. You don't have to tell me twice.

The start is covered with an early morning fog. I absolutely love this part of the country, it is so beautiful here. As I ride down the hill through the mist, I see the forms of a couple of riders up ahead, I hurry to catch up before the first turn onto Solano Road so I don't get lost.

Everything starts off great: like the Goldilocks of the cycling world I find the pace not too fast and not too slow, but just right. Focused on my breathing and perceived effort, I want to make sure that I give myself a nice even effort today. Looking at the map, the bulk of the climbing is in two individual efforts.

After an initial warm up period between Yountville and the town of Napa the pace starts to shift and more riders are starting to appear on the road. Just before the turn on to Redwood Road and move away from Napa toward Mt. Veeder and the first climb of the day, a woman passes me with three guys in tow moving just a little faster than the two guys I am following. Time for today's first decision...

I jump. It just feels right. I catch the last riders wheel and off we go. As we are cruising along, I keep waiting for the number two guy in the pace line to take a turn with a pull, but he doesn't. He just sits on this woman's wheel the whole way. This brings me to a personal point of frustration: why is it that recreational cyclists cannot run a pace line correctly? Instead of each taking a turn, working together and allowing a fellow cyclist to recover for another pull, people insist on sitting on your wheel until you either grind them up or they grind you up. It's just a poor way to ride. After watching this for two miles, I pass the loafers and offer to take a turn pulling, which she gratefully accepts.

We pull each other up Mt. Veeder Road and toward the first real climb of the day.

One of the things that attracts me to triathlon is simply being outside. The opportunity to enjoy changing landscape and the beauty that can be found in everything that is nature. As we leave the neighborhoods and begin to climb, I enjoy the trees and the underbrush off the road. The morning fog and mist keeps everything cool and damp.

Sadly, I can't remember the cyclists name, but I will call her Barbara. On initial inspection, you would look at her and say, what's the big deal? If you know what to look for however, you would think twice and treat her with respect. In, I would guess her early 50s, Barbara is of moderate build, with short grey hair and a sea green Bianchi bike. A quick glance at the rear gearing indicates that she is running extended gearing. The jersey is faded three shades lighter on the back that it is on the front from hours and hours in the saddle. There is a gentle ripple in the side of the calf and around the knee partially hidden by the bike shorts. This woman is the real deal and she knows how to ride in a pace line.

As we begin to see the first real grade of the climb, I listen in the morning quiet to our breathing. Barbara is quiet, but the three wheel suckers are getting a little more labored and are definitely not going to be any help the entire day. They have deemed that Barbara and I will do all the work.

I have three goals in this ride today: 1) I want to finish under 6:15:00; 2) I want to attack the hills and see where my fitness is really at and 3) I want to continue to work on my nutrition and get that dialed in for my attempt on the Ironman. There are two good climbs today and it is time to see what I can do.

As Barbara slides over for my pull, I catch her eye as I move up. "I'm going." She nods that she is coming with me. I thought the guys were her friends, but maybe not...

I shift and stand up. I'm certainly no elite athlete, so my explosion is to push the pace by 1 or 2mph. Fairly wimpy, but it's going to be enough in this case. After about 50 yards, I shift back and keep the cadence up. Barbara is right behind me. The boys try to make the jump, but can't hold on and end up letting us go.

As we pull each other up the hill, I can't help but notice how amazing everything is. The road twists and turns through trees covered in Spanish Moss. I just don't get scenery like this back home. Feeling it as we push for the top, the mist is getting thicker until visibility is about 20 feet. I start thinking about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Right at the top of the climb there is a wire across the road with moss hanging like a flamme rouge from the Tour de France. As we push over, Barbara says that she is going to stop. Without thinking, I stop too. It just seemed like the right thing to do. Years of my Grandmother on my case about manners I guess. She tells me to go. I shrug, say thank you and goodbye and then take off. What a nice lady.

I pick up four guys as they are descending off the back side and stay with them down Dry Creek Road through the first aid station. The pace is quick and we are honestly a little reckless on the way down with everyone trying to maximize their speed. At the aid station, I make a quick stop for water before taking off. I don't wait for the group.

A rider passes me as I am working my way through the Oak Knoll District. He is obviously a little faster than I am and in a little better shape: perfect. I try to pull for him a little along the way, but he is simply stronger than I am and ends up doing most of the work as we push up the Silverado Trail on our way to the Vaca Mountains.

As we make the turn onto Sage Canyon Road and begin the climb to Lake Hennessey, he just stands up on his pedals and walks away from me. I end up running into a large string of cyclists making their way up the road and use the opportunity to leapfrog from one group to the next. No one has really got the right pace for me as I slog up the hill.

Beyond Lake Hennessey is the Pope Valley. I think this part of Napa County is too often overlooked. People obviously come to Napa to visit the wineries, but the land here is so amazing and the Vaca Mountains have a majesty all there own. I like to come up here and picnic. Just enjoy the quiet and the land. The temperature is always a couple degrees cooler here as well, offering at least a little bit of a break during the heat of summer. This is my first time on a bike up here and it makes the experience even better. The climbing is moderate up the valley, but people are starting to suffer. I work my way to the Aetna Springs Aid Station.

This must be what the last days of Pompeii looked like (with the addition of bikes everywhere). The aid station is the biggest of the course with the exception of the Veterans Home where the ride begins and ends. People are everywhere and the spread the the organizers put out is awesome. Along with the standards that you see at most events (pretzels, watermelon, oranges, etc.), they have homemade baked goods made by somebody who was serious about the task. I confess to taking a piece of marble pound cake that made me moan out loud as I ate it. Utterly amazing. Obviously the party zone, it was apparent that some of these riders planned to stay the weekend. Ride, what ride? We have all of life's necessities right here. After a pit stop and a water refill, I head for the climb everyone talks about: Ink Grade Road.

Just under 7km in length, Ink Grade averages about 5% over rough pavement with some sections in double digits. Shaded most of the way, the climb has a couple of false summits. I was pleased with my effort up the climb. While I did have a couple of dude...seriously moments, I got through the climb just fine. If I can be philosophical; like most things painful in life, it didn't seem as bad once it was over. While probably over-hyped just a little, it is definitely the toughest climb of the ride.
Working our way off the back side of the mountain, we took the scenic route back down to the Silverado Trail and the push down the valley to the Veterans Home and the finish.

The rest of the ride was beautiful but fairly uneventful for me, with one exception...

I kept running into the guy that gave me the pull across the valley on the way up toward the turn to Lake Hennessey. About the third time it happened, he started making jokes about it. He would pull away and then I would catch him later in the ride. The fifth time I caught him was right before the Yountville Cross. Both of us jumped onto the back of a pace-line of 5 riders. The pace was solid and everything was good until we hit downtown Yountville.

The ride posts that you are expected to obey all traffic laws at all times. As we pulled up to a stop sign, there was a Traffic Cop standing there barking at the cyclists that they had to stop. One bike back, I came to a rolling track stop and was preparing to move forward when she barked at me that I had to put my foot down or I would get a ticket. Unprepared for this, I couldn't get my shoe unclipped and basically did a slow topple into the guy in front of me, who yes, was the guy that I had been "running into" all day. Ah friends, it's all fun and games until you crash into somebody.

Fortunately I didn't damage anything for either one of us other than my pride.

As always, the volunteers were amazing. I also have to say that the Eagle Cycling Club did an amazing job with the organization of the ride while still keeping it low key. I would love to do this ride again in the future. What a great way to spend the weekend. The cyclists were very cool, the scenery was amazing and the aid stations were both well-stocked and in the right place. In short, this is a ride worth doing!

Also, Larry was kind enough to help me with Hartford Family Winery for the Double Dipsea this year. If I can put on my Sommelier hat for just a moment, you could do worse than enjoy a bottle from either of these wineries.

Race Report - 10/1/11 - Slam The Dam

Overcast and a gentle breeze are music to my ears as I pull in to the Slam the Dam Open Water Swim at Lake Mead. In its second year, the event is already growing in stature and is the 2011 SPMA Southwest Zone Open Water Championship. Events included 1.2m / 2.4m / 8k / 2.4m+1.2m / 8k+1.2m. The event is also sancitioned by the USMS and the USAT.

As a humble triathlete, I arrived focused on the 2.4 mile swim. The swim that will begin my Ironman journey next month. At the end of a huge build week for me, I want to see how my mind and body are holding up. I also want to see if I can beat my time from last year: 1:27:11.

All of the races (with the exception of the 8k) are held at Boulder Beach. The course is a very smart and simple T-shape that goes straight out from the boat ramp. Swimming left around the first buoy, you tackle your first 1.2 miles before passing down the back of the "T" to take on your second 1.2 miles with the finish just out of the water as you run up the boat ramp.

There are three waves for the 2.4 mile swim with me in the middle. I opt to start at the back of the wave, figuring I can miss most of the mosh pit that is the essence of an open water start. As soon as the starter sends us off, I realize that this is a tactical mistake.

I spend the first twenty-five meters of the swim behind a group of four swimmers that are apparently out for a Saturday stroll. The pace is unnervingly slow. Looking left and right, all I see is feet and wetsuits. I am torn, not wanting to be "that guy" who swims over your back so he can occupy that space in the water that you are currently holding; at the same time, I have a goal that I am trying to achieve and I'm certainly not going to get it done swimming with Miss Daisy. I force myself to be patient for a few moments, focusing on developing a rythm in my breathing and trying to will my heart rate down. It's then that I see my opening.

Swimmers two and three drift away from each other just a little and I see a sliver of open water between them. I don't hesitate: I try to will my 250 pounds into a 105 pound missle and dig holes in the water as I try to shoot through the hole. As I am not a fast swimmer, the whole process is agonizingly slow. Up to their calf, then the hip. The swimmer on my right starts to drift back and I let my hand run down their shoulder to let them know I was there. the gap holds and I wriggle through. I sight the first buoy, coreect my line slightly and pull forward a little more before trying to set myself into a constant tempo.

Rounding the first buoy and heading down the line for the second turn, my line is almost immediately horrible. I feel like I'm swimming parallel to the shore, but everytime I sight, I'm headed back toward shore away from the buoy line. It's like I'm driving a car with really bad alignment and no power steering. I manage to get around the second turn, sight down the buoy line and start to pull.

I swim for awhile without sighting focusing on my cadence and breathing. Suddenly as I breathe left toward the center of the lake, I see a Kayak unusually close to me. What the hell is this guy doing? I sight and it becomes immediately clear that I should be asking what the hell am I doing? Off course again, I struggle to work my way back into the buoy line. I finally get there just before the mid-point of the race.

The second half of the swim goes a little better. I finally pickup the line and am able to draft off a woman for about 500 meters before passing her. It seems to take forever to get to the next turn, but I finally get there and begin the pull for home. 200 meters in a swimmer passes me going the other way on my left (the shore side). I panic a little, thinking that I might be trying to swim to Arizona again, but as I sight, I see that it is him and not me.

I feel good through the swim and make the turn for the leg toward the shore, you can hear the PA and the crowd as you head for shore. I'm pleased with the effort, but am convinced that I am slower than last year. I know that I would have the energy to get on a bike and get going though, and that is an important part of today's effort.

As I climb out of the water and hit the shore, I call out my number and check my watch. Life is good.

Big month in quality. A lot of focused intensity or long distance and easier heart rate. Three events this month all done with the idea of trying to gauge myself for Pumpkinman and Ironman Arizona. Mileage was about the same as last month with an increase in run miles. Mileage was up over last year.

Things seem to be holding together as I continue through to October and a build period before I start to taper for IM AZ. Focus is very much on pace and nutrition, especially on longer efforts.

Dispatches From The Field - 9/17/11 - Pedal To The Medal

I'm really pleased with the effort today. If only I could get up on time...

The ride today was for Special Olympics. Great to see everyone out and having a great time. I would have loved to take my daughter to the bike rodeo, but she had soccer practice today, which is why I busted a move home immediately after the ride.

I hope everyone is having a great training weekend!

NOTES TO COACH CYNDEE
1hr 20min late to the start on a total oversleep. They let me do the ride anyway. Clocked the climb from the first turnout where the cross is to the Fire Station at the top of the pass. 1:00:02/7.75 miles. I ended up passing about a third of the field over the course (including a short stop to help a cyclist). There was no chance to draft off anyone, so it was all me.
Nutrition was still PB&J and Fig Newmans along with Nuun. No real pop in my legs today. I couldn't really pickup a wheel all day. The climb was nice and steady though. I feel like I am improving.

Dispatches From The Field - 9/16/11 - Just Get 'Er Done

Supposed to be my day off.

Went to the gym and lifted for an hour to make up for the missed workout two days ago.

Dispatches From The Field - 9/15/11 - Brick

80 miles on the bike followed by a 3 mile run. I've done both of those distances several times before. It's not like it's anything new...except I've never done them in a Brick before.

Which is why I am a little nervous.

The plan is to ride out to Southern Highlands, then over to Hwy 160, up 160 (through construction) to Hwy 159 (the Red Rock Loop). Round the loop to the Downtown/Red Rock Bike Trail into downtown, then figure out a way to Boulder Hwy on the east side of town and then up Warm Springs to the house. Use the garage as transition and then run the 3 mile loop off my house. I'm even sand bagging a little bit because the run only has about 300 feet of elevation so I get away with a flat finish.

Late to start. I am not getting enough sleep and my body is in full rebellion mode at this point. It's kind of a Catch-22 though: I have a Swing Shift job which allows me to train and study during the day, but to get that time, I usually don't get to sleep until 1-2 in the morning, and then try to get up at 5. I have decided that my body is running a 4-hour rule. If I don't get at least 4 hours sleep, I am not getting up. Which is why I'm over an hour late getting started.

First stop is at the Village Market in Blue Diamond. Mid-week is quiet when I arrive. On the weekend, there are at least 6-15 cyclists here during all hours of the morning. I make a quick dash in for some water and get going.

Yeah...the Downtown/Red Rock Bike Trail is merely a bike lane on Alta Street that runs into the heart of Downtown and then dumps you with no real outs. I would like to thank the city planners and traffic engineers for pretending to care about alternative transportation. I deek/dive and curse my way to Fremont Street on the far side of the Fremont Street Experience.

I just want to point out that I took all of these pictures at traffic lights, which just goes to show you that I am developing mad game when it comes to multi-tasking.

The overall ride was good, but I started to wear down a little bit as I got closer to the house. Probably just anticipation of getting off the bike. I also realized that I was going to come up short on mileage, so I made a detour at the end to add in enough additional mileage to get me to my 80 on the bike.

The run would have been fine, had I not chugged a bottle of water in transition and then taken off on the run. I developed cramping through my whole left side, which slowed me down some. Still, I got it done and things feel like they are starting to come together.

THE WORKOUT
Ride 80 miles moderate zone 2 endurance effort. Hydrate as if you would during any race and make sure you eat and do gels on a regular time schedule. About every 45 min for gel. Keep track of fluid intake and let me know how much you drank. What hydration drink are you drinking for long rides? Run 2-3 miles after your ride.

MY NOTES TO COACH CYNDEE
OK, rode a loop of the valley including 160/159. Alta and the downtown area slowed things down some with all the traffic lights. Nutrition was PB&J, Perpetum, Nuun and Fig Newmans. Drank 4 large bottles during the course of the ride and a 16 ounce bottle of water in T2, which was probably not the smartest thing, because I developed a massive cramp from my right chest around to my right kidney about a quarter mile into the run. The cramp stayed with me through the run, but cleared up shortly after. I felt a little tired during the last 10 miles of the bike, but I think it was more mental than physical (traffic, etc.). The run was all about the cramping. I felt like the turnover was decent, but it was hard going and slowed me up some.

Dispatches From The Field - 9/14/11 - Sometimes...

work gets in the way of a perfectly good training day...

Morning started before the sun came up. I have both a swim and a general strength training workout scheduled today and chances are I'm not going to get everything in. Work calls.

I have a mock service exam that I am putting on with a fellow Sommelier at work for six candidates who are preparing for their Advanced examination with the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS). Between getting my daughter up and to school, the mock service and then work, I think the only time I will have will be before the day gets going for everyone else...which is why I am in the pool before the sun comes up.

Great swim for me. I realize that a real swimmer would see these times as slow, but for me, a sub-10 is quick. I was really pleased with my effort in the pool today.

So after violating several traffic laws in the great state of Nevada on the way home, I never did get to the gym to lift as work turned into a 14 hour day. These things happen.

Dispatches From The Field - 8/13/11 - Hill Repeats

Ran Green Valley Parkway for hill repeats today. 0.69 miles at an approximate 5% grade.

THE WORKOUT
Find a long hill that takes about 5 minutes to run up or that is at least half mile long.
Warm up 10 minutes running easy then do
5x2 minutes on hill run hard up hill easy on the down hill
5x5 minutes on hill run hard up hill short stride quick foot turnover then recover easy on downhill
When climbing hills HR may get as high as 5 that is ok
If on treadmill try first one on incline 5 then increase slightly for each one.
Cooldown easy 1/2 mile
Should take 75 minutes about 7 miles.

Green Valley Parkway west of HMCC to Horizon Ridge. I didn't have the workout with me so I used the whole hill until I completed the mileage.

MY COMMENTS TO COACH
That was hard. Ran out of gas in the last 5x50 set. Dizzy after the 6x100. Ready to throw up at the 6x50. On the positive side, I recovered pretty quickly after getting out of the pool. Noticed my form breaking down as I was getting tired (not lifting my arms in particular). Really focused on form everytime I had a break down. Overall, I was pleased.

7:30am - Home to get everyone going and get Lucia ready for school.
8:30am - Drop Lucia off at school.

THE WORKOUT
Very easy bike for 45 minutes. Keep cadence high and in a easy gear. Cadence about 80 mostly in zone 1 for this ride.
(zone 1 is not possible unless I walk the bike)

MY COMMENTS TO COACH
Hit every light, fought my way through the Silverado Track Team, cut off by three cars and buzzed twice. Bunch of haters today. I got the time in, but that's about all I can say for this ride.

3:30pm - Pickup Lulu from School. Talk with her teacher about questions that Melissa has regarding her homework and reading (homework is relative in kindergarten).
4:00pm - Church for Catechisim orientation.
Get Lucia fed and runmore errands.
7:00pm - Swim lesson for Lulu. Her teacher had to cancel classes this week, so Daddy is filling in.

More chores and work.
